James Webb, 2008

The fifth annual Sherburne Citizen of the Year for 2008 was Jim Webb.  He was the fourth generation of the Webb family to be in business in the area.  In the spring of 2005 local businessman, Jim Webb stepped forward with an offer of the log cabin at Historic Park. Many of Sherburne’s citizens volunteered their time to build this structure donated by James Webb. James was the eighth generation of the Webb family to live in Chenango County, with the first five generations of the Webb grandfathers living in Beaver Meadow, beginning in the 1800’s with Rodney, Thomas, Anson, Ezra T and Warren.  Jim’s grandfather, Charles I Webb, founded Webb and Sons in1925 and eventually moved the family to Sherburne in 1936.  The business expanded under Jim’s father, Julian W Webb, a community and business leader and long-time mayor of New Berlin.   Jim Webb has owned the family business with assistance from family, friends and associates for years.  At one time there were seven home centers for Webb and Son, Inc., selling everything for home, farm, business and garden. LOK-N-LOGS has been serving world-wide customers since a small start in 1975 with their customized log home kits. Town Supervisor, Harry Conley stated that “Jim has done much for our community, especially by acquiring old landmarks such as the Cotton Mill in 2000 and the Sherburne Inn in 2006, rather than see them fall apart.”  Supervisor Conley also thanked Jim for the much needed Historic Park building, which he donated and was dedicated to his late son, Josh Webb. Jim McDaniel of the Sherburne News spoke about Jim’s endeavors to help the community through the Rotary.  Mayor Bill Acee also spoke as well as members of the audience. A wonderful presentation was given by the Historic Park Society for a well- deserved Citizen of the Year Award to Jim Webb.
